Shared Vision
The Community's Vision
During the preliminary planning process for Ho‘opili, D.R. Horton – Schuler Division turned to the community for feedback on what their vision of the ‘Ewa region entailed. Thus, the Ho‘opili Community Task Force was formed. Residents from ‘Ewa, Kapolei and Waipahu worked closely with D.R. Horton – Schuler Division to identify key aspects for a vibrant lifestyle within the secondary urban center, and define the role Ho‘opili would play in fulfilling the vision of the ‘Ewa Development Plan.
Three core values have been established by the task force as items that have molded the approach and design of Ho‘opili: create a community that is 1) connected; 2) lifestyle-enhanced; and 3) promotes green and sustainable initiatives.
Positioned as the gateway to ‘Ewa, Ho‘opili was designed to be a connected community on various levels. It is envisioned to connect the surrounding communities of Kapolei, ‘Ewa, ‘Ewa Beach, ‘Ewa Villages, Honouliuli, Kalaeloa, Kunia, Makakilo, Waipahu, and West Loch with one another and the greater Honolulu area. Ho‘opili aims to provide transportation alternatives through the construction of new roads while at the same time, integrating public transportation and promoting a transit-oriented development lifestyle. Additionally, it is designed to connect residents easily to local shops, parks, schools, and employment areas through a network of transit-oriented pedestrian and bicycle paths.
Being a lifestyle-enhanced community was another focus for the task force. Ho‘opili will be a balanced community with a unique urban lifestyle in a “village” setting, with mixed-use space so that all residents are a convenient stroll from restaurants, shops, transit stops and other daily necessities. Housing will be diverse to accommodate all types of lifestyles and income levels for potential residents to thrive on the ‘Ewa Plain. Schools and jobs are being planned for Ho‘opili to create an area in West O‘ahu where it is possible for residents to live, work, learn and thrive in their own community.
Remaining environmentally responsible to preserve an island home that generations to come will be able to enjoy and flourish in was the third component the task force prioritized. D.R. Horton – Schuler Division will incorporate green building practices when constructing residences. With these green initiatives, homes should be resource-efficient and promote healthy lifestyles for buyers. The network of pedestrian and bicycle paths that will run throughout Ho‘opili are intended to reduce automobile dependency, as homes should be 5-10 minutes away from schools, shopping centers and transit stops. Ho‘opili will also provide ample parks and open spaces with community facilities for residents to utilize.
As the development moves forward, the Task Force will continue to play an important role shaping Ho‘opili.
